Lemurs live in the rainforests of Madagascar. Lemurs happen to be adaptive to ecological niches, however most lemurs reside in Madagascar due to the endangerment of their species. The diet of Lemurs vary between the large species being herbivores and the smaller species being omnivores. Living in Madagascar there is a wet season where there will be tons of fruit to feed on and there is a less dry season. During the dry season lemurs consume plants and leaves. Those exact dieting occurrences illustrate the lemurs adaptation to it environment.
Spider Monkeys reside in the upper layers of rainforests of Central and South America, in their built canopies. Spider Monkeys primarily eat fruit but sometimes veer from that diet to eat/consume leaves, flowers, and insects. They feed on fruit from big trees and because they swallow fruit whole, they end up eating the seeds. The lead female is responsible for finding food sources, however if she can't find enough for the group then the group splits to forage and cover more areas in the forests to find food.
Baboons live in the open savannah and hills across Africa. They are omnivores and herbivores. At times they eat insects, fish, hares, birds, and small antelopes. They also forage plants and being located in the Southern part of Africa often prey on sheep and goat being farmed by man. Because of their geographic and environmental surroundings baboons prey on animals and insects within their region and each varies because the competitiveness in the savannah of the other mammals. Baboons feed on smaller animals and even vervet monkeys. unlike other primates baboons dont have access to rainforest food like fruit so when they forage they have to gather things like birds eggs, fish, and or hunt and eat small antelope together.
Gibbon live in tropical and subtropical rainforests ranging from northeast India to Indonesia and even in the Northern China. Gibbons are omnivores, their forging efforts are done during the day. They eat fruit and forage leaves, flowers, seeds, tree bark, and tender plant shoots. They also eat spiders, insects, birds eggs, and small birds. Because they reside in rainforests percentage of their diet Gibbon forage during the day, however they also take advantage of their ecosystems offerings by feeding on all sorts of food sources.
Chimpanzee or Chimps are able to inhabit drier less densely treed areas but only if they have access to some forest area for food and shelter. Chimps are forests primates. They live in countries in Central Africa ranging from Congo to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania. Chimps are omnivores similar to human beings. They feed on mostly fruit, seeds, nuts, leaves, and flowers. They also eat larger animals and fish termites with a stick. Chimps require water supply and a wide variety of fruits in their habitat, because their diet they able to live in a numerous amount of habitats.
The environment has played a big part in the physical and behavioral qualities of all primates, each varying/ differing from one another. From primates that live in the savannah to primates that dwell in forests, they all have one thing in common their diets have adapted to their habitat and all primates named in this post eat fruit. However they all have different diet balances and needs. Lemurs do not eat as much as Chimps and Chimps don't hunt like baboons and no other primate listed forages as much as spider monkeys. Their behaviors and abilities to hunt vary by physical traits, geographic location, and competition within their ecosystem. The savannah being the most ruthless containing dangerous animals from the cat family such as Lions, Leopards, and hyena.

I really appreciate that you took the time in your summation to actually compare the trait across species as opposed to just summing up. It adds depth. Although I did not have diet as my trait, when I was doing my own research on socialization and mating, I was really struck by the adaptability of the Baboon. I read that they even have the ability to change the way they digest food and can even process human garbage if their food supply changes or runs out. That is pretty impressive. Did you come across anything like that in your research? I contended that this made them most likely to successfully avoid the pitfalls of the man-made destruction occuring in these primates natural habitats. What are your thoughts?
ReplyDeleteNo but did come across info that they would come into contact with human beings and would feel threatened so they would run if they "felt" outnumbered, but if there were more baboons present they wouldn't budge.
DeleteVery good post. You recognized the commonalities of the omnivorous primate diet but you also made great connections between the environment and the unique qualities of each primate diet. I particularly liked how you included a discussion on foraging strategies in the spider monkey section. Well done and good images.
ReplyDeleteThank you, It took a lot of time to figure out the different type of diets and how to describe them without saying/sounding like they all had the same diet. There were small differences because of the actual size and traits that differed between the 5. But thanks for the recognition.
DeleteGreat job. I really enjoyed your summary, very informative. It was also interesting to find out that it is the female spider monkey that is responsible to bring the food. While researching lemurs for my post I also read that lemurs are insectivors so whether the season was wet or dry they could also feed off the habitat's insects and since baboons do not often live in the rainforest they may have trouble finding water and will get by licking the morning dew from their fur.
ReplyDeleteI actually watched a natural geographic video on youtube, after submitting this that taught me about the feeding of different primates. Wish I would of thought it before actually doing this assignment.
DeleteI enjoyed the post, i got me understanding a bit more about how the monkeys react to their environments. Very informative.
